Protecting the Planet
Our planet provides our civilization with natural resources that allow us the drink, eat and produces materials to sustain life. We are trying to maintain equilibrium within the earth’s delicate eco structure. As individuals, it is our responsibility to try to live a lifestyle that leaves the least impact and the most benefit on the environment.
Making Eco Friendly Choices
Flooring materials should also be chosen with the environment in mind. Choose materials which are sustainable and don’t have a negative environmental impact. Manufactures of flooring materials should practice environmental stewardship. Interiors Only has a variety of flooring materials such as 100% biodegradable wool broadloom, cork flooring, solid and engineered hardwood and bamboo flooring. Today, some synthetic broadloom can be recycled and some broadloom is made from recycled materials such as pop bottles.
Made from the bark of the Cork Oak tree, cork flooring does not leave a negative impact on our environment. The bark of the tree is peeled off every nine years. No trees are harmed during the harvest of the bark. The primary use of the bark is for the production of wine stoppers from which the manufacturing waste is reground used for a variety of other products such as flooring, insulation, shoe soles, handbags and furniture to name just a few. Cork is a sustainable and renewable natural resource.
Cork floor tiles, by nature, are non-porous and will not allow moisture to penetrate its surface. Cork has a unique honeycomb cellular structure
consisting of 50% air. This attribute gives the cork floor tile a firm warm comfortable feel under foot. A natural protective substance called Suberin, is found in cork bark. It prevents water from entering the tissue and thus does not allow cork to rot. Cork is remarkably resistant to wear. It tolerates impact and friction better than many other natural hard surface materials. Cork does not spread flames nor does it produce harmful gases. Like many other natural materials, cork will fade from exposure to sunlight or high intensity bulbs.
The do-it-yourselfer or the professional can install cork floors. Floors are available as both glue down and easy to install floating floor tiles. There is no shortage of colours, sizes, patterns or designs.
